I had many mentors I surrounded myself with as I have progressed in my education. One of my mentors, Jerry Dickey, DO told me at the beginning of my Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) Fellowship, “I am going to make you a teacher.” I didn’t think much about it at the time, but learning how to teach, and then learning how to mentor, has been one of the most rewarding aspects of being a physician. Guess I have it in my blood, as my father Michael Clearfield, DO is the Dean at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and has been a career educator himself and a great mentor to me.
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Along the same lines, if you practice medicine you can help thousands of people, but if you teach others how to practice good medicine, then you can help millions of people get the care they deserve!
