Motion IS Medicine! “Motion is Medicine” is not just a clever name for our company, it is truly a way of life. Our bodies are meant to move, when we stop moving, we die. We have different needs for moving, simply getting around, living our lives, as well as performing athletic activities. We need to be able to move if something urgent or emergent happens, we even have to be using our muscles while we are sitting still to stabilize our body. We need to move to be able to exercise, and we need to be able to move appropriately. Exercise is the most common medicine I prescribe to my patients. Exercise is beneficial for us to control our blood pressure, control our cholesterol and our weight, tone our muscles, including your heart, and reduce our risk for many types of cancer.
Anytime you have something that restricts movement, something which prevents you from being able to do the tasks your body was designed to do, this can lead to injury, pain, and dysfunction. This is why I do what I do as a sports medicine physician, I try to keep people moving! By performing procedures such as osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), the goal is to allow your body to heal and seek its inner wellness, assure the muscles and ligaments have the proper tension on them, and ensure the bones are in their proper alignment so you can optimally function. By performing procedures such as a steroid injection into an area such as an inflamed bursa in your shoulder, which is preventing you from being able to effectively rehabilitate it, the goal is to calm the inflammation and pain down, allowing you to rehab your shoulder so that the inflammation will not return. Another example is injecting your arthritic knee that is causing too much pain for you to be able to get up and actually attempt to go out for that walk you want to do. Sometimes the body has forgotten how to move, sometimes the body has forgotten how to heal. We have innovative treatments we can perform to allow your body to heal itself, to allow your body to start walking on the path towards wellness, and hopefully running on that path thereafter! Motion IS Medicine, it’s time for you to get moving!
