Hematoma Management

Hematomas are collections of blood that accumulate in a space after an injury or trauma. They are typically acute issues but if left untreated can develop chronic problems. Dr. Clearfield is able to fully visualize these using diagnostic ultrasound and then safely and accurately aspirate/drain them, ensuring a full resolution of the hematoma.

Morel-Lavallée Lesions

  • Morel-Lavallée lesions area closed degloving soft tissue injury, as a result of abrupt separation of skin and subcutaneous tissue from the underlying fascia. They can lead to chronic pain and cosmetic deformity over the affected area.
  • While some of these lesions are so large they need to be managed by a surgeon, most of these injuries can be successfully treated at Motion is Medicine.
  • By utilizing ultrasound we can fully characterize the size and consistency of the lesion and use ultrasound for guided evacuation.
  • We will also often perform a sclerodesis procedureto get the area to seal after the treatment, preventing recurrence.

Auricular Hematoma Management

Auricular hematoma is an acute condition of the ear that occurs typically after trauma causing bleeding (hematoma) in between the cartilage layers of the ear. If left untreated this condition can lead to the ear deformity known as “cauliflower ear.”  If treated within the first 7-10 days this deformity can be treated in the office by Dr. Clearfield.  This is a common injury seen in grappling sports including: wrestling, judo, MMA, jujitsu, and boxing.
