Regenerative Orthopedic Medicine

Regenerative Orthopedic Medicine uses the body’s innate ability to heal itself when it has forgotten how. Injection of growth factors or growth factor stimulants can result in growth of normal cells or tissues, stabilization of joints, and reduction or elimination of pain.  Orthobiologic procedures look to correct the biology of the damaged joint or tissue. Most importantly, these procedures improve function of your injured or degenerative tendon, ligament, and/or joint!

Loose ligaments and degenerative tendons and joints may produce one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Significant tenderness to palpation.
  • Inability to maintain one position for prolonged periods of time.
  • Pain when the joint is first used that is relieved after repeated movement.
  • A numbness or pins-and-needles sensation in a specific pattern that doesn’t become more
  • sensitive or painful when stroked.
  • A sense of looseness or instability in the affected joint(s).
  • Local and referred pain. Referred pain is felt some distance away from the injured site.
  • Muscle tightness and spasms. Muscles will contract in an attempt to pull the joint back to the correct location or stabilize it to protect it from further damage. If the joint is slightly out of place because of a loose ligament, it may respond to treatment by manipulation, such as Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) or chiropractic care. Conditions that respond well to these manipulative treatments but quickly return to a painful condition tend to respond very well to prolotherapy.
  • Trigger points or knotted muscles that keep recurring in the same locations or that don’t respond to other treatment. Recurring trigger points may indicate that there is a problem elsewhere in the body that is affecting the muscle(s).
  • Arthritic / degenerative joints by stabilizing the joint capsule and surrounding ligaments. This includes arthritis of any joint of the body, most commonly treating arthritis of the: knees, hips, spine, hands, ankles, and TMJ (temporomandibular joint).

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a type of regenerative orthopedic medicine (ROM) that stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms to repair chronically damaged ligaments, tendons, or other structures. The treatment involves injecting the injured area with a safe substance that causes a small amount of local tissue irritation or inflammation. This “good inflammation” triggers the body’s natural repair processes to strengthen the existing tissue and to enhance the growth of new tissue/collagen.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

The Pittsburgh Steelers and athletes such as Rafael Nadal have used PRP to treat both acute and chronic injuries with amazing results. In addition, PRP has been found to be beneficial in relieving pain and improving function in people with arthritis. Platelets, a component of blood, are thought to be responsible for the beneficial effect of PRP through the release of various growth factors. These growth factors can aid in the growth of new tissue, new bone, new blood vessels, and many other natural healing properties of your body.

PRP involves removing a small amount of your blood and spinning it down with a special centrifuge to concentrate the growth factors, then injecting those into the area of concern.

Cell Therapy Treatments

Stem cells have several unique abilities! They can transform into other cell types, such as bone, cartilage, muscle, and tendon. They also serve an important part in cell signaling, recruiting other stem cells to the target area, and triggering nearby cells to begin the repair process. Stem cells are showing promising research in treating severe tendon and ligament tears and degeneration as well as more pronounced arthritic joints (moderate to severe).

At Motion is Medicine we have two different types of Cell Therapy Procedures we perform:

Micro-Fragmented Adipose Tissue (MFAT)

MFAT involves harvesting a small amount of adipose tissue (fat) from the lower abdomen, flank, or upper buttock and isolating the stem cells from this tissue. This is performed under local anesthesia (we keep you awake and talking to us, but without any pain!) and can be performed in the safety of our office under sterile conditions. The adipose is then washed and processed, isolating the healing components, and is directly ready for injection into the damaged area.


Bone Marrow Aspirate (BMA)

Bone marrow aspirate is a procedure where a small amount of bone marrow is aspirated from the posterior pelvis. The stem cells acquired are used to signal the healing and potentially the regrowth of the tissue. This is performed under local anesthesia (we keep you awake and talking to us, but without any pain!) and can be performed in the safety of our office under sterile conditions. This process can usually be performed in as little as 15 minutes! The stem cells are directly ready for injection after the aspiration into the damaged area.

Shockwave Therapy, Extracorporeal (ESWT)

Shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) or Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology (EPAT) is a natural and non-invasive treatment that stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms to repair both acute and chronically damaged ligaments, tendons, or other structures. The treatment involves using acoustic (sound) pressure waves to the injured area that causes microtrauma to the tissue stimulating the healing response. This positive inflammation triggers the body’s natural repair processes to strengthen the existing tissue and to enhance the growth of new tissue/collagen.

Platelet Releasate

Platelet rich plasma is a powerful tool using your body’s own growth factors to stimulate the healing process. Platelet releasate takes it a step further, releasing the growth factors from the platelets to have a more profound effect. Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M)
